Build Your Own Website or Hire Someone to do it for You?

So you want to build a website, huh?

And you are asking yourself the same questions everyone asks when they want to build a website…

Build your own…

Or hire someone to build it for you?

This is one of the most common, and most important, questions you will ask yourself in the website process.

Why?

Because the considerations matter. They are important. And this cannot be denied.

On top of that, the results are too important to screw around with.

Regardless of who built it, you need to know that your website is quality, will represent you well and will function as an additional growth and/or support arm of your business.

That’s right.

Your business should perform like any other employee in your business.

It should have a defined function, expectations and KPIs, so to speak.

So, how do you create this new employee? How do you get it from the drawing board to the internet?

Either on your own or with some help.

Let’s talk about the things to consider while making that decision.

Technical Ability

I know this seems like a no brainer, but the key part here is to be honest with yourself.  Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do something.

I can’t tell you how many times we work with people who thought they could build their own site, felt pretty tech savvy and knowledgeable so they put their own site together.

After all, WordPress is a great WYSIWYG editor (you do know what that means, right?) so it’s user friendly and many people can learn the basics.

Only to find out that their site didn’t rank in the search engines. It was slow and clunky. Things would break periodically, seemingly without reason.

And the reason is almost always the same.

Sites take work. And practice. And training.

There are unseen pieces that must be completed for a site to be functional and effective.

And those can often be overlooked.

So be honest with yourself about your technical abilities.

*WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get. That basically means you can build it without using coding. 🙂

Support Team

Do you have a support team to help you when things go a little sideways?

Websites take maintenance and care. And they break.

For one reason or another, they just break.

It could be a plug in you update that is incompatible with your core WordPress install, or there is a conflict between two plugins.

Perhaps a plugin you use hasn’t been updated, or the developer goes out of business and they stop updating their software.

Or maybe you do something that breaks your site. Maybe you make an update and somehow, somewhere, something goes wrong and the site will no longer load.

That is the worst!

If you decide to build your own site make sure you have a plan, just in case something goes wrong, so you can get your site up and running again ASAP.

Budget

What is your budget for your website?

Be honest about this too. How much money, and time, can you afford to invest in your site? What will it cost you to build your own site? Do you have the money to hire someone, even if you wanted to?

Remember to factor in the hard costs that come with building a site.

Hosting, plugins, theme, graphics, copywriting if you don’t do it yourself…

There are some inherent costs you can’t avoid. And forgetting to include them will only lead to surprise and likely stress when you realize what things are costing you.

Functionality

Finally, what functionality will your site need?

Will you be ok with a simple 1 or 2 page site that simply serves to give you an online presence?

Pretty easy!

Do you need ecommerce and a custom learning platform?

Not quite as easy!

It’s important to be really clear on what you want your site to accomplish so you know exactly what you have to do to accomplish it.

Will you be able to get all your needed functionality with a simple website? Or will you need plugins and add ons and other customization? These will let you know what you need to do.

These key considerations, given attention BEFORE making any agreements, decisions or signing any contracts will make sure you are ready to build an amazing website.

It will prevent you from spending money on a professional if you don’t need one.

And keep you out of trouble with fix it professionals if your own build goes wrong.
